The Great War is over, and there is a lot of money to be made. Socialites and politicians travel Cunard’s premier ocean liner, the Elysium, to spread their fortune and influence around the world, from New York to Cairo, from London to Shanghai. And when they do, I’m waiting for them.
The Spanish Prisoner confidence game has proven to be very lucrative with rich, American men. As the daughter of a North African king wrongfully imprisoned in an old inquisitor’s fortress in Cadiz, I can easily walk away with several thousand pounds.
Another favorite is Follow the Lady, in which a hapless gambler bets that he can find the queen among three cards. With my gift for sleight of hand, they never can, and I return to my stateroom significantly richer.
Finally, there is the Beijing Tea Scam. For this elegant grift, I employ the aid of my associates. In the Far East, we take in unsophisticated rich travellers by convincing them to experience a rare tea ceremony. Without seeing a menu, they are glad for the experience but unhappy to receive the unexpected bill. Regardless, they pay to preserve their dignity, and my friends and I share the winnings.
