Welcome, traveller, to Jomsborg! I am called Halldór, loyal companion to the thegn, Amleth Waetling. Though he hails from Jorvik and is a subject of the earl of Northumbria, Amleth's oath is sworn to the secret brotherhood of mercenaries called the Jómsvikings. Amleth is the son of Grímalf, an Anglo-Danish hirdman of Sweyn Forkbeard and Cnut the Great. His Gall Gaidheal mother, Mýrún, is the daughter of a prosperous Dubh Linn Viking who earned himself a generous plot of farmland.
Among his fellow oarsmen and warriors, Amleth is a reputed skald, gifted for his way with words and haunting melodies, which he plays upon his Glee-wood (harp). Blest with the seid, a trait inherited from his mother, Amleth's songs often have wondrous characteristics. They are sometimes prophetic, other times meant to incite the savage berserkergang within his companions, and still other times thought to actually cause considerable damage themselves. He is sometimes called by various kennings, including Thunder Cry and Tongue of Fire. One tale tells of how with a powerful shout, Amleth toppled the timber walls of a Slavic fortress.
Lately, Amleth had been among Harald Hardrada's Varangian Guard in Miklagard. For the last two years he has been a captive of the Emirate of Sicily, where he became the legendary Sadin al Hamaddah, "the Singer of Destruction". His final prophecy spelled his freedom from their prison, and he presently heads West to claim his inheritance.
