Welcome, traveller, to my master's ship, the Fenrisúlfr! I am called Eowils, loyal ćsc-berend (spear-bearer) to the skipper, Amleth Waetling. At sea, I am his chief navigator, measuring directions and distances by stars, tides, and the magical sunstone.
My master, Amleth, was born in Northumbria and weaned upon a life í-viking. His childhood was spent on campaigns in England and Ireland and at court in Trřndelag. When he came of age, he was granted his own ship and crew. Since, he has mostly sailed the trade route between Jórvík and Dyflin.
Amleth is the son of Grímalf Waetling, an Anglo-Danish Jómsviking and grandson of Gorm the Old. His mother, Herdis, is the daughter of Sigurđr Hákonarson, Jarl of Hlađir and self-appointed King of Norway. From this family he is of the Sćming race, the legendary Sons of Odin.
Among the Hrafn Félag, Amleth is a reputed skald, gifted for his way with words and haunting melodies, which he plays upon his Glee-wood (harp). Amleth's songs often have wondrous characteristics. They are sometimes prophetic, other times meant to incite the savage berserkergang within his companions, and still other times thought to actually cause considerable damage themselves. He is sometimes called by various kennings, including Arrow-tongue. One tale tells of how with a powerful cry, Amleth toppled the timber walls of a Slavic fortress.
Strút-Thored is the imposing, Kievan skipper of the Hrímfaxi and hersir of the Hrafn Félag ("Raven Fellowship").
Kormak makes up for Thored's harshness with great charm and humour. This Hjaltlander is the skipper of the knarr called the Garmr, and he is thus Keeper of the Spoils after our raids. His is the last ship to make landfall, but somehow Kormak is the first to order himself a horn of ale and perch a wench on his knee.
Sigfast is a berserker of the first water. A mighty oarsman aboard the Fenrisúlfr, a passionate warrior, and an aggressive debator, this Swede is nobody to be trifled with. Just make sure you've got the hot and cold vats of water ready to bring him down from his battle-frenzy.
Another notable Fenrisúlfr oarsman, Bergs-veinnam is the youngest of our crew but also the noblest. He is the seventh son of an Icelandic jarl, sowing his oats out upon the whale-road with us. We count ourselves lucky to have Bergsveinnam in our number.
Is it to Ástridr that the Waetlings of old made sacrifices. She is one of Ođinn's Swanmays, the Waetlings' Hamingja. She grants her family luck in all their endeavours, and while most Waetlings today recognise her very passively, there are still few who acknowledge her with passionate devotion.
A Svartálf from the mountains of Niđafjöll, Hallgrim lately dwells in the world of Men, forging magical objects in the form of swords, shields, mail, and rings. She also possesses a great wealth of knowledge relating to the Nine Worlds and the terrible beasts who frequently breach Midgard's marchlands.
