Knight of Tortworth, Marcher Lord of Llysworney
I was born in March of 1160, at Vayle-hall near Tortworth, in the parish of Berkeley Hundred, Gloucestershire. My father was Peter of Vail, a knight whose romance with a Welsh peasant brought me into this world. I never knew my mother, and my father spent most of my childhood at war against the Infidel. I was raised by my nurse and my stepmother, Mathilda de Beorun.
Since my father's departure, my stepmother carried on a not-so-secret affair with Lord FitzHarding of Combe. Once we accepted the likelihood of my father's death, Mathilda de Beorun permanently resided with FitzHarding at his holdings in Combe, leaving me as Master of Vayle-hall. I make my home both there and at a family manor in Llysworney, where I am a Marcher Lord. Many Welsh farmers and vintners reside in Llysworney, under my jurisdiction, and here - I was told - a man could be a king himself, for the English Crown had no authority in Welsh lands.
Though I enjoyed my freedom, I was appalled by the corruption and injustice exhibited by my fellow Marcher Lords upon the Welsh people. When I had the opportunity, I made sure those English lords suffered for their crimes. The peasantry that work on my estate gave me the epithet Valerius - "The Strong" - for my willingness to stand up for the Welsh.
If you're looking for me, I may be found at the Sconce & Scabbard or around the castle at Vayle-hall.
