A Prologue by James Fenton.

We know where the cauldrons were buried, and the axes, the flesh-hooks and the spits, we know the site of the obsidian mines and the source of the chocolate colored flints, but who posed these questions first - we will never know. Who noticed the Sun rise in winter between the Wolfs' Teeth, and thought to mark the summer's trajectory? Who measured the shadow? Who sank the great pits for the calender stone? Who kept in mind an ancient calculation and served his tribe for a memory?

We know that the stars were constant to the navigator's eye, but who first remarked the planets in their retrograde motions, who first saw the sky as a question - that we will never know, or who first conceived the Earth as a general proposition?

When the season favoured the ships and the horizons were friendly, when the wind and the current carried men forth like a desire, and the village rounded on their young, 'Leave, or be a burden to us', they found old tales to be true, of succeeding to land, and life beyond their promontory, and places of distant wealth.
