The Temple of Apollo is the repository for an immense collection of treasures brought to Rome by the Divine Augustus and members of his family as a tribute to the greatness of our city. What you will see inside the viewing rooms is only a portion of the items protected in the temple’s vault deep inside the Palatine Hill.
As the curator of the temple’s collections, I have selected a sample of interesting pieces for public viewing. Before we enter the treasure rooms, however, I must caution you not to touch the display cases or attempt to examine any of the items by hand. Should you disregard this warning, you may end up being interviewed by the Praetorians!
Here in the guard chamber outside the viewing rooms, you can see two of the principal benefactors of the temple. In the center of the room, you see a statue of the Divine Augustus in his role as princeps senatus.
Standing before the entrance to the Dactyliotheca is a marble statue of the Emperor’s nephew Marcus Claudius Marcellus who died so tragically at a young age. The emperor commissioned this heroic sculpture from Cleomenes the Athenian in memory of Marcellus.
Now, please follow me into the Gold Room.
