(THIS IS AN OFFICAL, "WHAT WILL SHE WEAR NEXT?" SITE.) Welcome to my Domus! I am Messalina Terentius, an actress and dancer at the theater of Pompey. (I know what is said of women on the stage, but it is not always true.) I came to Rome two years ago from my father's estates outside of Capua. He owns a fine villa there and a gladiator school as well. I started as a dancer at the theater and worked my way up through small parts until I made aname for myself. My father was not pleased to have an actress in the family and disowned me when I refused to leave my profession. So I had to make my way and my fortune on my own.
As you can see my villa is quite beautiful. Yes, it is true that it was left to me by Senator Falco in his will. His wife was not pleased to say the least. His gift did color my reputation here in Rome. Let them talk all they want. A woman alone in Rome must live as best she can and use what the gods have given her. Only a fool would have refused such a gift.
Please come in and have some wine.
If there is anything you require do ask my slave Pomponia.
Allow me to introduce my household staff. This is my very able bodied bodyguard Macro.
Musical, simply musical. Oh yes, and he plays the lyre too. He has been with me the longest, a gift from the Senator who felt I needed a bodyguard. Bodyservant what he really is. Macro sees to all me needs. There is gossip among the slaves that he is in love with me. I pay no mind to the idle catter of the kitchen slaves.
This is Demetrius ex-gladiator. I must admit, that I have a weakness for gladiators. It must be my upbringing in Capua that set my tastes in men. I bought him at an auction for gladiators from a school that had gone out of business. He is completly devoted to me and follows me everywere! He works in my private apartments and helps me with all manner of things. Being Greek he speaks and reads Greek, Egyptian, Hebrew and some Celtic. He also is in charge of the olive oil supply to my household. He is a shimmering additon to my stable of servants.
My newest aquisition is Apollonius.
He is from the East, Caesarea if I recall correctly He is new to the household and so for now he lights the lamps. He is also very good with opening doors and arranging cushions on the couches for my guests. I never cared much for men with beards but there is just something of the animal about him that apeals to me. Oh yes, Demetirus has a beard too! Oh well, what can I say? Here we have is Titus.
He helps my guests feel more comfortable. He is a masseur from Gaul. He has very stong hands and can work out any tightness that you may have. I always feel so relaxed after he has worked me over. What was that you said? Oh....another beard! Well that does it, I am taking them all to the baths for a shave!
Oh and of course Pomponia. She has been with me the longest. Pomponia! Are you wearing one of my wigs again? Well, take it off and put it back where you found it. You look ridiculous! Oh I swear by Jupiter's stone she is such a pain sometimes.
This is a flyer for my recent appearance at the Theater Of Pompey. The play was the old Greek chestnut "The Trojan Women" by Euripides. Not the usual fair for Roman tastes by my producer Varius Bibulus thought it would be a good setting for which to present me as Helen of Troy. Everyone who is anyone was there and I even caught the eye of Sejanus. A dangerous man but so attractive. We are now in rehearsals for my new play "The Rope" It is a comedy by Plautus. It promises to be a smash hit and run for weeks.
(NOTE TO ALL FANS OF THE ACTRESS MESSALINA. THESE POSTERS ARE SUITIBLE FOR POSTING AT YOUR DOMUS, VILLA, OR PALACE. JUST BE SURE TO REMEMBER TO ADD "I AM A FAN OF MESSALINA!" AND SHE WILL BE THRILLED TO RECEIVE YOU BACKSTAGE AT HER NEXT PERFOMANCE. HURRY WHILE SUPPLIES LAST.)
On the right is a portrait of the actor Merula, one of my costars at the theater. When ever we appear together the house is sold out. He and I are thinking of taking the show on the road to Alexandria Egypt!
