My China is a place of pavilions and temples, lakes and snow-capped mountains. It is also a world of cruelty and injustice and subject to wanton and capricious rulers.
Among the sages, scholars and poets I found freedom from antique rituals and the intricate hierarchies of imperial society through my gift for invention. I had the ability to transform myself from wilful daughter to adored concubine, from notorious courtesan to admired poetess.
There is speculation about the story of my life but only I know the truth.
