Welcome to the home of the cloth weaver Janey Scylding.
Weaving begins with spinning, an ancient textile art in which plant or animal fibres are twisted together to form yarn or thread.
The fibre is spun by hand using simple tools, the spindle and distaff. The characteristics of spun yarn vary based on the material used, fibre length and alignment, quantity of fibre used, and degree of twist.
Weaving is the textile art in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads, called the warp and the filling or weft, are interlaced with each other to form a fabric or cloth. The warp threads run lengthways of the piece of cloth, and the weft runs across from side to side.
Cloth is woven on a loom, a device for holding the warp threads in place while the filling threads are woven through them. Weft is an old English word meaning "that which is woven".
"Spindle, my spindle, haste, haste thee away,
and here to my house bring the wooer, I pray."
"Spindel, Spindel, geh' du aus,
bring den Freier in mein Haus."
Thanks for visiting my home!
