Ishtar Gate
575 BC restored in Berlin
The symmetrical gateway is a very formal passageway decorated with elegant animal figures raised in relief above the surface. The heraldic animal figures represent the dragon of the god Marduk and the bull of the god Adad.
The Babylonians ruled from about 1792BC to 1650BC and from about 605BC to 562BC. Here's a brief list of what these people were: Babylon means "gate of the god." It was surrounded by walls and canals. They were invaders from the Arabian Desert. A general named Hammurabi becomes King and takes control of the Sumerian city-states. Hammurabi designed a Code of Laws which was to protect the weak
from the strong. It safeguarded the rights of the individual. It
affected all aspects of Babylonian life: trade, farming, wages, and working conditions. It was based on equal punishment and
treatment for all people. "An eye for an eye."
In mathematics the number system was based on 60. they developed the concept of zero. This reflects today's use of 360 degrees in a circle and 60 minutes in an hour. They also knew the approximate value of pi. The Babylonians developed astronomy and knew the positions of the stars, planets, the moon, and the sun and could calculate dates and the beginnings of the seasons. They believed in astrology, that a person's life was affected by the movement and position of plants and heavenly bodies. They had two kinds of medicine: practical and magic remedies for many recognized diseases.
