In Edo (present day Tokyo) during the Toganawa Shogunate or Edo Period (1615-1868), an artform called Ukiyo-e flourished. It had particular significance and appeal for the merchant class, a stratum of society low on the hierarchical pecking order. Ukiyo-e, which means 'pictures of the floating or sorrowful world', was considered art for the low born. Ukiyo-e images document the pleasure world of Edo.
