Partout dans la nature, les Indiens voient la présence d'esprits, de force.
La vie est un dialogue permanent avec elle afin de se les concilier ou de s'en protéger.
Nous voyions la main du Grand Esprit dans presque tout: soleil, lune, arbres, vent et montagnes. Parfois, nous l'approchions à travers toutes ces choses.
Etait- ce si mal? Je pense que nous croyons sincèrement en l'Être suprême. ...
Les Indiens qui vivent près de la nature et du maître de la nature ne vivent pas dans l'obscurité."
" Quand tu te lèves le matin, remercie pour la lumière du jour, pour ta vie et ta force.
Remercie pour la nourriture et le bonheur de vivre.
Si tu ne vois pas de raison de remercier, la faute repose en toi-même."

Dans un discours célèbre en 1855, le chef Seattle résuma magnifiquement la différence entre la philosophie blanche et la philosophie indienne de la nature:
" Le ciel au-dessus de nos têtes qui a pleuré des larmes de compassion pendant des siècles et des siècles, qui nous paraît immuable et éternel est soumis au changement.
Aujourd'hui est clair, demain il sera peut-être recouvert de nuages. Chaque parcelle de ce pays est sacré dans l'esprit de mon peuple, chaque flanc de montagne, chaque vallée, chaque plaine, chaque bocage a été sanctifié par un événement heureux ou malheureux survenu à une époque depuis longtemps révolue. Les rochers eux-mêmes apparemment muets et morts transpirent sous le soleil le long du rivage silencieux et frémissent du souvenir important lié à la vie des miens. " Le seul indien bon est un indien mort " phrase définitive et célèbre du Général Shéridan.
Ainsi la conquête de l'Ouest ne fut qu'une extermination systématique de millions d'Indiens.
A l'origine de toutes les religions, on retrouve le même respect pour la terre, la nature.
Jamais une religion ne prêchera que l'homme est égal à Dieu et doit dominer la nature.
La soumission à la nature est commune à toutes les civilisations.
Tout autour d'eux la nature s'offrait en spectacle, les Indiens surent la respecter et l'aimer.
Ils surent l'écouter avec assez d'humilité pour découvrir les liens qui unissent les animaux, les hommes et les plantes. Des liens secrets que la tradition a su conserver jusqu'à aujourd'hui.
" Les Indiens vivaient en communion avec la nature. Pour eux, il y avait des esprits dans les arbres, des esprits dans les plantes, des esprits dans les fleurs."
