The Home of Volturnus Oil
Always Smooth, Never Bitter
Salve, visitor! Welcome to Villa Venafra, the home of Volturnus oils. I am Quintus Servius, the steward of this estate. We are located just outside the city of Venafrum in the Valley of the Volturnus River. This area is known for producing the finest of all olive oils.*
This estate is a villa rustica, which I manage for the owner Sextus Furius Maximus. Actually, I am the steward for three estates on this side of the valley owned by the Furii family. There are two more across the river run by another steward. If you would like to leave a message for the master, you may do so here.
Since the master is away at Capua, I will give you a quick tour of the operations. Follow me to the olivetum please.
* In his Geography (Book V, Chapter 3:10) Strabo states that the finest olive oil comes from Venafrum. Pliny also cites Venafrum as the source of the best oil for use in perfumes, ointments, and for the kitchen and table in his Natural History (Book XV, Chapter 2). The satirist and poet Horace writes of Venafrum oil as the best in an Ode.
