Unmarriable and rejected from cloistered life, Eleanor Godwinson chose to stick close to dad. Ealdwine Godwinson is a village constable, a Saxon noble in a largely Welsh barony on Shropshire's Cymric border. Esteemed highly by William the Conquerer, Eleanor's family had been granted an ancestral constableship, provided they help manage their Welsh borderlands. Ealdwine continued to safeguard the border, under the command of the High Sheriff of Shropshire.
When Ealdwine and his sons followed their king to Jerusalem, Eleanor effectively became Maiden Deputy, donning the guise of a mysterious knight and moonlighting as a defender of the Marches from rogue Welsh outlaws who take advantage of the king's absence.
