It is my belief after searching the Rameses estate in Alexandria that the 'Eye' may have been missing for many years until the Aga Khan found it missing. Or did the Aga Khan find it himself and hide it at his Cairo penthouse for his daughter to find? From his note this does not seem likely. He was shocked that it was gone and that may have led to a sudden stroke [possibly] and the the fall from the horse. I do not belive that he was murdered, but the genuine 'Eye of Ra' may have been missing for years befor he realized it.
