Phersu torturing a prisoner with a mad dog on a leash. Fresco from Etruscan Tomb of the Augurs, c. 520 BC

Welcome to my Domus! As you probably know, from the Hollywood movie that stole my name, I was a famous gladiator in ancient Rome, where I led a revolt against the revolting pastimes of the Romans. Far less known is the origin of those barbaric games in the funeral rites of my Etruscan ancestors, where masked demons like Charun and Phersu tortured prisoners in honor of the dead. To find out more about how such sacred rites became public spectacles of the Romans, see my posts in Etruria.
If you wander through my house you will discover places that serve as my homebase for certain activities, not all of them of the genteel sort! In the Courtyard I conduct my social activities here at AncientWorlds and at Rome. My Library is for my historical and academic pursuits. Finally, in my Study you you may find more such lovely or gruesome artifacts. Thanks for visiting my home!
