This is the Icon of the Holy Trinity. Painted in the early 15th century, probably around 1425, this is one of the most masterful of the Russian icons. The large icon was executed by Andrei Rublev for St. Sergius, the founder of the Trinity Monastery at Sergeev Posad (Zagorsk). Although there is severe damage to some parts of the picture, the quality and composition of the icon are still quite legible. Painted by one of Russia's preeminent icon artists, the picture represents the Trinity through the image of the three strangers welcomed and feted by Abraham under the oak of Mamre (Genesis 18). The icon is noted for its vivid colours and masterful circular composition indicating the Oneness of the Triune God, centering on the single blood-filled chalice set in the table's middle.
