The picture on the right depicts the charming legend of how Elizabeth Woodville first met Edward IV. Elizabeth was the widow of Sir John Grey who had been killed at the second battle of St Albans in March 1461 while fighting for the Lancastrian cause. The legend has it that fearing she might lose her dower rights Elizabeth purposely maneuvered to meet the king while he was out hunting in Whittlebury Forest by waiting for him under a tree later know as the 'Queen's Oak'. She threw herself at his feet and begged for his help. Edward is said to have fallen in love with her on the spot.
