eredur Paladr Hir (lit. "Longspear") is the son of Pellinor ap Eliffer Gosgorddfawr of Dinas Bran. Peredur was born at the fortress, a direct descendant of Ioseff Arimathea. Eliffer was the last of the long line of Arimathean kings who ruled the Northern Kingdom of Ebrauc. His son Pellinor returned to Dinas Bran, which takes its name from Ioseff's son, Brān Fendigaid.
A Breton lord called Esclados wants to keep Ynys Prydain (Britain) weak, so he rallies the support of kingdoms on the Continent. Chief among his warlords is the ruthless Amangons, who conquered the Fortress of the Berenton Fountain in the Forest of Broceliande and made Esclados its lord.
It has been prophesied that the House of Arimathea (once again at Dinas Bran) would produce a scion called Percer-valles (Piercer of the Valley) to help Arthur and his rhyfelwyr (warriors) restore Britain and defeat her foes with a mysterious weapon called the Grail, though it is not entirely clear what this object is. Amangons and Esclados, enraged by this prophecy, have set out to discover this Percer-valles and destroy him.
When relations between King Pellinor of Dinas Bran and his wife Perfawr became strained, Perfawr took their child Peredur from the fortress to the nearby monastery of Llancadfrod in Cwm Dyfrdwy. Amangons and his men besieged Dinas Bran and killed Pellinor's mistress and child, believing them to be Perfawr and Peredur. In the meantime, Perfawr raised her son ignorant of his own lineage and of the world outside the valley.
Twenty years later, there is a prophesy that Peredur still lives, and Amangons catches wind of it. He returns to Dinas Bran and discovers that the Percer-valles resides with the monks. Unwilling to accept a fate at the mercy of Amangons, Peredur escapes Cwm Dyfrdwy to discover who he is and make his own destiny.
