This photograph at right shows the ruins of the Celtiberian city of Numantia, near the modern city of Soria, Spain. Spain became the target of Roman conquest after Rome defeated the Carthaginians in the Punic Wars. Some of the greatest resistance came from the residents of Numantia. The city fell to the Romans in 133 BC after resisting capture for almost two decades.
