If you look on an old map of Israel, you might find a city named Megiddo. It sits astride one of the few mountain passes from southern Israel/Egypt to northern Israel/Mesopotamia, which made it a vital tactical place in wars. There were several big battles there in ancient times, which led the ancient Hebrews to assume that if there ever was a battle to end all battles, it would occur there. The whole Hebrew name for this city is Har Megiddo, which became written as Armageddon in English. :-)
