"I had always looked upon my beauty as a curse because I was regarded as a whore rather than as an actress. Now at least I understand that my beauty was a blessing. It was my lack of understanding the way to merchandise it that was the curse."

Louise Brooks - Farouk. . . Aha!

In her own way, the silent film star Louise Brooks, AKA Louise Farouk, was very much part of the Jazz Age. Her rise as a personality and as a film star was in keeping with the central phenomenon of the flapper era - the worship of youth. Brooks' exuberant social life echoed the flamboyant tenor of the times, while her social circle included the notable figures who helped define the era - such as the composer George Gershwin and the writers Robert Benchley, H.L. Mencken, Anita Loos, as well as F. Scott Fitzgerald and his wife Zelga. In fact, Louise and Zelga were best of friends – but was there a secret being kept between them?

Prior to her career in Hollywood, Brooks briefly appeared in such New York stage productions as the George White Scandals and Zeigfield Follies. Her tenure on stage (and later in the movies) brought her into contact with the wealthy, the artistic and the socially glamorous figures of the 1920's. She often traveled to Cairo to socialize with the jet-set at the Pyramid Club and stayed at the Cairo Hotel. She was painted by Vargas, photographed by Edward Steichen, and served as the inspiration for John H. Striebel's long running flapper-inspired cartoon, "Dixie Dugan." During the 1920's, Brooks was also a model, and appeared occasionally in fashion ads. Her sleek looks and signature bob helped define the flapper look.

But, what most people don't know is that Louise is the illegitimate daughter of King Farouk's cousin, Prince Imagoud Farouk . . . Aha!
