The great porticoes which began to be erected in the Augustan era were places where people could escape the sun under the colonnades, take leisurely walks, talk with friends, or enjoy the displays of artwork brought to Rome as the spoils of conquest. The exhibition of great works of art was part of the Augustan political program, designed to show the Princeps’ generosity. The public display stood in contrast to the “exile” of valuable art when it was held in the in the private villae of the Republican aristocracy.

Although much fine art remained in the homes of the wealthy, including that of the Princeps himself, a significant number of great works were exhibited in new or rededicated public spaces. The Saepta and the surrounding Porticus Argonautarum and Porticus Meleagri were each home to famous sculpture groups, and the porticoes were decorated with paintings.

This thread provides a space for the display and discussion of the art of ancient Rome:

    • Create an original work to share with other visitors and post it below. We especially welcome themes related to the Argonauts, the Caledonian Boar hunt, Greek heroes, or the Saepta and Roman virtues.
    • Leave a comment about the famous art of ancient Rome or the treasures brought to Rome by conquest.
    • Create a special exhibit for this thread. Please contact the curator with your idea.
