Romans used public places like the Saepta and its colonnaded porticoes as places to meet, talk, and play games during leisure hours. Although public gambling and betting were sharply restricted, games of skill and calculation could be played openly, often with a group of onlookers watching. Latrunculi (a board game of military strategy), checkers/draughts, “nuts” (marbles), and other games were popular activities. The remains of game boards have been found scratched into the steps of the Basilica Iulia in the Forum. Create a game, puzzle, or quiz for visitors to play in the Courtyard and post it below.
