This is a series of posts (originally appearing on "The Comneni" thread) that present the story of the rise and fall of Andronicus I Comnenus, the last Emperor of the Comneni dynasty, who effectively ruled the Empire from 1182-85. Andronicus was a figure of enormous ability, daring, and charisma, but he ultimately came to a bad end; the reader will soon see why he has often been seen as a Byzantine counterpart to England's Richard III. This series uses two different literary devices to explore Andronicus's dramatic and contradictory life. The first is a fictional autobiography supposedly written by Andronicus in the years between 1180 and 1185 -- the "Memoirs of Andronicus Comnenus." Second, the series also looks at the events of these years and Andronicus's own actions through a variety of other approaches -- historical fiction-type posts presenting the perspectives of other key actors; re-created "historical" documents; fictional letters from real historical actors; and news reports on the events of the first half of the 1180's in Byzantium in the style that modern news organizations might have used if they had been around to report on these events. We hope you will find "Memoirs of Andronicus Comnenus" both instructive and enjoyable.
