    Attributes of Manannan mac Lir

Manannan, like his father, is God of the Sea. His residence is located on Emain Abhlach, part of the Land of Promise. As ruler of the sea, he surrounds land, and in doing so is the Protector of Land. He is both warrior and magician, guarding the gates to the Otherworld. He may grant safe or ill passage to destinations of the conscious or unconscious; thisworld or otherworld. He is said to posses a bag made from a crane that contains all the treasures of the Tuatha de Danann, powerful sorcerers who came to Ireland following the Fir Bolg.
He is the perfect deity for a Gael. The Gaels traveled much, not the least of which occurred over seas. Manannan can be revered and invoked for safe journeys through land and sea or the conscious and unconscious. I myself have invoked him many times before and after both such journeys. He has favored me well.
