When Teotihuacán fell in the 7th century, the central unifying force in Mexico (and indeed in all of Mesoamerica) was gone. The loss of that centralizing force left a large power vacuum in Mexico, into which stepped a number of smaller cities, each vying for power and prestige. Between 650-900 CE the competeing cities developed new political and trade alliances and eclectic art styles.
