As our second guest in The Symposion Series, Dr. Elaine Fantham will spend a week at AncientWorlds May 14-20, 2006
If you "google" Dr. Elaine Fantham (perhaps most widely known as the Classics Commentator on National Public Radio), you will find an ongoing list of publications in classical history. One of her most influential books is Women in the Classical World, which from the date of publication became a textbook for the emerging field of women's studies in classical history. Dr. Fantham's new book, a biography of Julia, the unfortunate daughter of Augustus, will be published next month (Julia Augusti: The Emperor's Daughter). We are delighted to welcome Dr. Fantham to a 'residency' at AncientWorlds.
Dr. Elaine Fantham was Giger Professor of Latin at Princeton University with specialization in Roman theater, epic, rhetoric, and women's history until 1999. Her many publications include the books, Roman Literary Culture (1996); Women in the Classical World, Image and Text (1994 with Foley, Kampen, Pomeroy, and Shapiro); Lucan: de Bello Civili II (1992); and Seneca's Troades: A Literary Commentary (1982). Dr. Fantham is a member of the editorial board of the journals Phoenix, Materiali e Discussioni, and Rhetorica. She was an academic consultant to the PBS series The Roman Empire in the First Century.

The Roman Group Vita Feminae Antiqua is proud to sponsor Dr. Fantham's visit to AncientWorlds.
