Romulus allegedly founded Rome in 753 B.C. For the next two and a half centuries, Rome was ruled by kings, and foreign kings at that, until the last Etruscan king, Tarquinius Superbus, was exiled in 509. Romans themselves conceived of Romulus as their first king, followed by six semi-legendary successors. The impact of royal rule was such that, half a millennium later, Julius Caesar died just because his enemies thought he sought kingship again. For discussion of royal Rome.
