Until Caesar surpassed him, Gaius Marius, seven times Consul of Rome, was the greatest general and political force of his time. His conflicts with Sulla, however, helped rend the Republic.
Until Caesar surpassed him, Gaius Marius, seven times Consul of Rome, was the greatest general and force of his time. Political infighting with his one-time subordinate, Sulla, led to civil wars that led to bloodshed and proscription, destabilizing the Republic, perhaps fatally. He was also Caesar's uncle by marriage and an incalculable force in molding the young Roman.
