The fortress on the hill is not supported by solid archaeological evidence. A few scattered stones may once have been a palisade wall. No serious digging has been done at this site.

Dún Oíche is the ancestral home to Fedelm Cruithni and her family. A small but sturdy ring fort, atop the highest hill in the area, Dún Oíche commands a fine view to the north and across Loch Watten. Near the base of the hill, on the eastern flank, there is a circle of standing stones which overlooks the Acherole Flow. The hill is surrounded on the north and east by no fewer than five Brochs. There is also an extensive farming community located on the Strath Burn.

The coniferous forests on the nearby slopes and the hardwoods of the valleys provide ample game, while the lake is filled with several kinds of fresh-water fish. In season, salmon also come up the rivers to spawn.
