It is summer of 265 AD, near the end of the illustrious reign of Cormac mac Airt, one of the first "High Kings" of Tara. Though St. Patrick won't arrive in Ireland for almost two hundred more years, Brighid has invited the hermit Conlaeth to build a monastery near her oaken santcum in Cill Dara. Once again, the fair goddess of Imbolc has wrestled the earth from the Cailleach's wintery clutches and imbued the summer raiding season with the fires of poetic inspiration.
After the cold, harsh winter, Beltaine usually kindles a song in every heart and flowers and festivals blossom throughout the land. But this summer, an uneasy hush has fallen across Éire.
On the surface, nothing much has changed. Fiachra, sole heir to the sovereignty of the Niafer tuath, is now safe in the hands of the Baoisgne aristocracy and the intinerant Niafer poet Amlaidh, on Baine's brother's fortified dun in Cill Dara.
The outlaws have scattered far and wide. Some have returned to Magh Croimor, while others still reside in an abandoned dun in Temhair Luachra, where they appear to have cashed in treachery and intrigue in favour of cattle, crops and other such creature comforts. Sean was last seen in the Tara Marketplace in the arms of a leanan sidhe, while his his ever-watchful mate WinterMist guards their babe from unseen forces.
The only stirrings of late are in Cill Dara, where Niafer Filidh Rua Fenian of the Felling Blows has once again returned from the brink of madness, this time under the gentle ministrations of the healers at Brighid's Sanctuary. His loyal friend, Torann has set out from Inver Colpa with designs to return him to his former glory as the Niafer War Chief.
On nearby Magh Cuirreach Liffe, Conlaeth disturbs the old order with the thundrous clapping of his cleric's bell. He is answering Brighid's call to build a sanctuary large enough to house the devotees of a new god, while the ancient god Cern maintains the balance of life and death in his wild wood sanctum.
At the beginning of the new raiding season, nothing is assured. Will Torann succeed in bringing Fenian home? Will the Niafer warrior-poet stay sane long enough to recognise him? Or will he and Aislinn continue their mad wanderings in the wilds of Éire? If so, who will they encounter next?
Will the outlaws shake off their torpor and stir into action? Will Amlaidh and Baine manage to keep Fiachra safe in Dún Dair? Will WinterMist and Sean be reunited?
Come join the good, the bad and the stark raving mad for another free-for-all Summer of bragging, brawling, looting, leaping and lording it over the hoods of Celtia!
What fresh twists and intrigues are in store for us all before the Cailleach hammers the ground with her icy staff and calls the mayhem to a halt with another year's uneasy truce?
