Until 1430, most of France north of the Loire was in English or Burgundian hands; to the south, the royal domain constituted less than half the total territory of what was France. The turning of the tide in the Hundred Years War (actually a series of conflicts that lasted a combined 116 years) reclaimed Normandy, Gascony and many other lands before the Eniglish became embroiled in the their own 'War of the Roses' that would eventually bring a certain Anglo-Welsh family to the throne of England. Although France managed to recapture the rest of its territory through annexation and absorption, there were problems on the horizon as much of Europe was destablised following the Reformation and France was no exception. For thirty years the Wars of Religion ravaged the countryside. The accession of the Protestant Henry of Navarre as Henry IV did little to end the war with Spanish backed Catholic League. Not until the king converted to Catholicism did the conflict begin to wind down and through the subsequent war with Spain at the turn of the 17th century, France began to realise her position as the dominant power on the European continent.
