Ostia was the port of Roma, situated at the mouth of the Tiber some sixteen miles from the Eternal City. For many centuries, Ostia protected the western shore of the Tiber and served as a gateway for vital grain supplies for Roma. Today, most of the old Ostia was excavated and work is ongoing in other sections. Ostia, even more than Pompeii, was a reflection of Roma's style and tastes.
