Did Caesar Destroy the Roman Republic?

Did Julius Caesar give the death-blow to the Republic, or was it dying in any event?
Caesar's crossing the Rubicon, and the ensuing civil war with Pompey and the Senate, is judged by many to have destroyed the Roman Republic. Others say the Republic was on its last legs in any event. For discussion of this critical point of Caesar's legacy.
