The Karen, Mien, Akha, Lisu, Lahu and Hmong Hilltribes
The Mien, Akha, Lisu, Karen, Lahu and Hmong are the primary hill tribes of Thailand. These people are not Thai, but have migrated to the hills of Thailand over the centuries.
The tribes that make up these 'Mountain Peoples' each have a distinct language, religion, dress and historical background.
They migrated from southwest and south-central China.
The Karen may also be found in Myanmar. These are the most numerous, and most distinct from the other tribes. The Lahu, Akha and Lisu have common linguistic roots in the Yi (Lolo) division of Tibeto-Burman languages. The Hmong (Meo) and Mien (Yao) who speak the languages of the Miao-Yao sub-division of the Sino-Tibetan family of langages migrated from south-central China.
