In the 9th century the Myanmar (Bamar or Burman) people migrated from the China-Tibet border region into the valley of the Irrawaddy. In 849 Bagan (Pagan) was founded and made the capital of the Myanmar kingdom, but it wasn’t until 1044 that the first Myanmar empire was formed under king Anawratha. In 1287, the invading Mongols under Kublai Khan destroyed Bagan, and the country disintegrated into three small states for the next three centuries.
