With their conversion to Christianity, the Viking peoples were drawn more and more into the orbit of medieval European Christendom. But not before they made their indelible mark on the history of England.
By the Eleventh Century the now Christian kings of the Viking peoples were interlinked with many of the great royal houses of Europe. Viking Scandinavia became more and more part of European Christendom at a time of a great stirring, intellectual awakening and Church reform.
But these Viking rulers were to weild great power in northern Europe in this period, forging an "Empire of the North Sea" in Britain and Scandinavia. The heir to this legacy was the man they have called "the last of the Vikings" - Harald Hardrada of Norway. His gamble to seize the throne of England in the fateful year 1066 ended in defeat and death and is thought to mark the end of the Viking Age.
