While the southern Germanic tribes were on the move and the Roman Empire was collapsing, the Pre-Viking North Germanic peoples of Scandinavia were also in turmoil.
Far from the borders of the Roman Empire the North Germanic peoples of Pre-Viking Scandinavia were in a state of flux. Smaller tribes were absorbed or destroyed by new confederations and powerful kings began to emerge.
Gold, in vast quantities, flooded into Scandinavia from the south and the rich burials at Vendel and Valsgarde are testament to the wealth and power of these new dynasties. In Sweden, the tribe once known as the Suiones pushed out their rivals in a series of wars which find their echo in the lines of Beowulf. Similarly, the Danes become dominant in the country that was to bear their name, as the Jutes and Angles either migrated to Britain or fell under their control. And in the "North Way" - the strip of fjord-pierced land than runs along the western Scandinavian peninsula, warring tribes and clans laid the foundations for the later Norwegian kingdom.
It was in this time that the explosion of people which made up the Viking expansion has its origins.
