During his life (106-47 BC), Pompey "the Great" was often close to being dictator of Rome, but in the end was vanguished by Caesar in the struggle for ultimate power.
Gnaeus Pompeius Magnus was one of the greatest generals and administrators in Roman history, but in his long career was intricately involved in Roman politics. Once Caesar's son-in-law, his army was destroyed by Caesar's in the Battle of Pharsalus (June, 47 BC) and Pompey was murdered by the Pharoah of Egypt's thugs.
