The mystery of where the Huns came from has puzzled historians since late Roman times. This thread is for discussion of Roman speculation and modern ethnographical and historical theories.

To Roman historians, the Huns were a scourge that seemed to come from nowhere. To ancient Christian theologians, they were the Bibical tribes of Gog and Magog returned, according to prophecy, to usher in the End Times. To the Goths, they were the wild offspring of Gothic outlaws and the witches of the great steppes.

From their first appearance in Europe, there has been great speculation about who the Huns were and where they came from. Linguists, ethnographers, archaeologists and historians have all examined this question and produced a broad range of answers.

The Huns themselves told of how they were led into Europe by a sacred shamanic stag spirit. But from where?
