The Mysteries of Dionysos: initiation and rites

The Villa of the Mysteries, just outside Pompeii on the road to Herculaneum,
depicts the process of initiation into the mysteries of Dionysos.

(This scene is at the center of both the room of the villa and the ritual.
Dionysus sprawls in the arms of his mother Semele.)
