rebetika
Rebetika is a very Greek musical feature. It is often called "The Greek Blues", because the themes are quite "bluesy": love, hate, depression, good and bad luck in life. A special theme within Rebetika is the way of life of the "Mangas", a Greek man of the street, who has seen much in life and tries his luck in various ways, but never ended up really happy.
The genre of Rebetika started out as forbidden songs, sung in the back rooms of cafés, where usually there was a big waterpipe, filled with tabacco and hashish. The songs were accompanied by the bouzouki and the baglamas (a small type of bouzouki) and especially during the years that the Greeks were suffering under kingdom, Metaxas-dictatorship, 2nd World War, Civil War and Junta regime, this music was forbidden, but it secretly flourished. Famous interpreters are: Marcos Vamvakaris, Yannis Papazoglou, Manolis Chiotis, Michalis Yenitsaris, Vassilis Tsitsanis and many many others. Famous singers are: Kostas Roukounas, Roza Eskenazi, Marika Ninou, Vamvakaris, Tsitsanis, Kaity Grey, Anestis Dilias, etc.
