Question: Are the women featured on this board going to be those we look up to only because they did something particularly brave or noble?
Answer: No! Our heroes are women whom we consider central figures in an event or a period. They are "heroic" because of their abilities, achievements or qualities that helped define the age in which they lived.

"Rouged lips" is a verse from Chiyo's best and most memorable realization haiku:
Rouged lips
forgotton --
clear spring water.
This haiku, written at age sixty-two, shows her forgetting her rouged lips (the makeup which was so important to women of her time) while drinking the fresh water.
