Woe to the Vanquished
The year has been disputed by many historians. Varro dated it to 390, which was the 364th year of the founding of the city of Rome, and has become the most widely accepted year of the battle. But Polybius dates it as being the 19th year after the battle of Aegospotami, or 364 BC. Regardless of which one was the correct year, it was a battle that the Romans never forgot. It was the battle of Allia and it was a great battle indeed. In Plutarch's life of Romulus, he wrote:
Near to that place came Tarpeia
who lived on the Capitoline Hill
and who destroyed ancient Rome.
Mad with love for a Gaul
she forgot family and Fatherland.
In her insanity she surrendered to the enemy
that Rome which had mastered all the kings in the world.
(Romulus, 21.)
