    Kaifeng was the home of many theaters. One particularly popular entertainment was the zaju, a vaudeville sort of variety show including singing, dancing, music, comedy routines and acrobatics, which began during the Tang dynasty and had its roots in folk music. Each production was divided into three parts and had a story to tell.

    In the image above, the woman is playing is a pipa, an instrument developed during the Han dynasty which became popular during the Tang era. It has four strings which are plucked with the fingernails.
