Illustration from Water Margin, or Outlaws of the Marsh One of the four classic Chinese novels is Shuihu Zhuan, also known as Water Margin, Outlaws of the Marsh, All Men Are Brothers or The Marshes of Mount Liang. This story tells of a band of outlaws led by Song Jiang, and of the peasant uprisings of the 12th century, during the latter part of the Northern Song dynasty. This tale is generally attributed to Shi Nai'an, at least the first part of it. The last thirty chapters are thought to have been written by Luo Guanzhong, who also penned The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but there is some speculation that Luo Guanzhong actually wrote the whole thing, only using a pseudonym for the first part. The original probably dates from the Yuan dynasty, though there are several later revisions and additional chapters. Use this thread to discuss the novel styles and the specific novels either written in or about the Song dynasty.
