Lianming means alliance, union or coalition. The whole history of Kaifeng is characterized by shifting alliances. During the Warring States and Five Dynasties Periods, one after another of the feuding warlords set up a capital here, only to have it overrun by their successors. Even in the relatively stable Northern Song dynasty, the emperors preferred to arrange treaties, first with the Liao and then with the Jurchens to get rid of the Liao. Use this thread to discuss Kaifeng's role in China's history. |
