Your host welcomes you to the Tavern of the 7000 Jars and wishes you a relaxing wine filled stay. You'll notice we are a cat friendly tavern and so guests to the tavern are asked to be kind to the cats that wander in and out of our establishment.
The name 'Tavern of the 7000 Jars' is derived from ancient Egyptian legend and honours the goddess Het-her in her personification of Sehkmet.
The great sun god Ra, created Sekhmet from his fiery eye to destroy mortals who were conspiring against him. He summons his daughter, the goddess Het-her and gives her instructions to punish mankind. Het-her, in the guise of the goddess Sekhmet goes down amongst mankind but her blood-lust leads to her destroy almost all of humanity. Ra, horrified at the slaughter he has released upon the world, tricks Sekhmet into drinking beer stained with red ochre, placing the beer in 7000 jars throughout the land of Egypt. Sekhmet believes the red beer is blood and she drinks deeply becoming so drunk that she gives up slaughter and once again becomes the gentle goddess Het-her. The beer is very strong, and the goddess soon becomes very happy. Her head spins in an alcoholic fog and she finds she cannot recall exactly why she has been sent into Egypt. As Het-her, Sekhmet makes her way back to the sun god Ra and sinks down at her father's feet to sleep for many many days.
To pacify the raging lioness of Sekhmet, festivals were celebrated at the end of battle, so that there would be no more destruction. On such occasions, people danced and played music to soothe the wildness of the goddess and drank great quantities of wine and beer.

While you are enjoying a drink here,
you might like to read the story of the Destruction of Mankind and Sekhmet's role in it.
Our very own Mirjam Nebet has a beautiful page on the Book of the Heavenly Cow
and visitors to our tavern are encouraged to take a look at her rendition
of The Destruction of Mankind
remembering "whomsoever shall recite this chapter shall have life in Neter-kher."
