How to make a broom for your Imbolc housecleaning.

    1. Choose a sapling for the handle. Good choices of wood are ash, birch, oak or rowan.

    2. Gather two handfuls of birch twigs or straw, depending on how strong you want the broom to be, are tied onto the handle with strands of willow soaked in water for at least 2 days to make them pliable.

    3. Trim the ends evenly. The broom should stand by itself.

    4. The broom can be decorated by slipping some lavender, heather or dried flowers under the binding, carving the handle, or whatever you like to make it your very own.

      Broom Lore

  • Buy a broom in May and you will sweep your friends away.

  • A broom doesn't belong to a person, it belongs to a house. If you move, leave it behind and never take your old broom into your new house.

  • Jumping over a broom is a common wedding custom. In Welsh traditions, the broom is placed in the doorway of the home and the couple must jump over without disturbing it. If the marriage is broken, the couple jumps backwards over the broom witnessed by the same people who were at the wedding.

  • If a young girl accidentally steps over a broom handle, she will be a mother before she is a wife.

  • A broom placed by the door with the bristles up keeps away unwanted company. Some believe a broom by the door fends off bad luck.

  • Never sweep after sunset or you will sweep away your happiness.

  • If you have to sweep under someone's feet, say "I will dance at your wedding" or else it will be bad luck for them.
